wouldn't it be useful to have a trait that can be implemented in any data type that allows to hash a whole data structure without having to turn it into some sort of &[u8] to be hashed

This has come up a few times. There are a lot of tradeoffs to consider, and it's difficult to come up with a one-size-fits-all design: #87 (comment)
