Why is an OpenAI key needed?

I like the principle of using own documents because it is what makes the model usable in a general way and makes it possible to limit its conversation to a given subject.
Still, I don't understand why into that context, an openAI key is needed.
Is there no way to get rid of such a key so that training and questioning the model can be stand alone?
