I know it's hard to make a story around such games, but hopefully we can discuss and mix our ideas together to get something that makes sense 😊
When I use "Gaia" and names or expressions as such, they are just meant as placeholders because nothing better came up to my mind.

The Universe got a special configuration and thus a gate between two different dimensions got opened on the planet Gaia. The one dimension is inhabited by a superior life form, energy entities that live in peace with each other. The other dimension is massively overpopulated by all kind of wild creatures. While the gate is open, the wild hordes try to enter the new dimension through the paths of Gaia, desperate in the search of a new place to live. But the elementary entities channel all their energy to build up a physical defense against the intruders.
But with every creature passing the gate, the elements energy get disrupted and one of their towers falls for the negative energy of the intruders, opening yet another gate to their fierce world. (<- last sentence is the "twist")

I think this is an idea to develop. It's to confused for now, but we're here to work on it ^^.
The idea is good, but I would more think about something like this :

Both places are overpopulated. The gate attracts the peoples of both dimensions and they try to get in the other world. But they find out that they're not nicely welcomed, and begin a war against the other dimension. The Gaia dimension, full of plants and plains, and the Ungor dimension (name to develop), full of volcanoes and rocks.
Both factions are adapted to their world so they have a look that could fit with their own world.Their goal is to get the world to them, and to adapt it with their ressources.

With that idea, we can control both teams, in two different universes. It would also allow multiplayer, maybe ?
If we make a story-mode on that idea, it would be with two ones : Gaia campaign and Ungor campaign.

Also, this would quite guide the title idea :p

@ObaniGemini but aren't we already going into a complete different direction? We will have like ~9 enemies (at least 3 per tier) that spawn all from the same spots, and all walk to the same goal.

In your story, we would have more like an RTS where different units meet each others on a battlefield, but we have like one fraction that represent the units that have to be killed, and the other fraction, controled by the player, that are represented by the towers.

Since you never see a unit from the tower fraction and towers get placed out of the blue, I was thinking of this "elementary race" that works with energy / magic instead of physical horsepower. And since the units are the only ones to go from start to goal, I thought about them being the intruders who want to colonize another world 😄

But sure we have to discuss this, but I wouldn't change the game logic we agreed on already just to make it fit some story. We rather need a story to the already worked out game style 😛

@fry- : that's the point, it's not an RTS. There would be no different unities meeting on a battlefield. If you choose one team, you would have their towers and fight their walking ennemies.
