Does Chrome automatically open the options page for every extension? I hope it's something developers can disable. The way that the browser extension vimium handles upgrades is nice. It's chrome-specific I think, but the idea is elegant. The message itself just floats at the bottom right of the page, I think for a short amount of time (or maybe I navigate away quickly), and it's nice too because it gives a link to the release notes. If should show upgrade message (based on version number), then send message to all tabs like this. I think I'm generally in support of this not-too-obtrusive method, at least over having a new tab opened for each update. |
No. The options page opening is entirely on purpose and my doing. This issue is about how and when it auto-opens, not the fact that it auto-opens. Opened a new issue for getting rid of the post-upgrade options page opening: #95 |

With Firefox and Thunderbird, the Markdown Here extension will only upgrade when the application starts/restarts, so that's when the Options page will auto-open.
With Chrome (and Safari?), extension updates can happen at any time, so the Options page can open at any time. This means that it might interrupt the user in the middle of doing something. This is undesirable.
It would be better to detect a browser restart and show the Options page then.
