Session Proposal
A session proposal for the Collaboration Summit
Proposal
We are proposing to give a talk about the motivation and migration process of a large scale map application (globalfishingwatch) from mapboxgl (with a custom maplibre fork) to deckgl ⛵
Topic of the session
Following our organization intent of mapping all human activity at sea we saw the opportunity to do a whole rewrite/migration of the application cartographic engine to leverage deckGl's abilities on modularity and composability. This has increased repo maintainability and has allowed us to semantically encapsulate some complex layers.
Deck has also allowed us to use its data loading capabilities to serve many other parts of the UI (not related to the map) to display cartographic based data in a diverse range of formats (charts, texts...) derived from current map state
The talk will cover architectural decisions, performance improvements, and lessons learned that can be applied to similar large-scale migrations.
