I'm trying to use more apps right now, so as to get a better idea of what others are doing (style-wise).

One common thing on many apps right now is a Navigation Drawer on the left side: https://developer.android.com/training/implementing-navigation/nav-drawer.html
https://material.google.com/patterns/navigation-drawer.html

This seems like it could be a replacement for our current right-hand menu. It feels more modern, and I think many users would be used to it.

I do not know how much work it would be to switch from our current menu to this.

Not any sort of priority, of course. I think the current menu looks good.
