Feedback and Ideas for Enhancing GIS-Based Traffic Simulation with Mesa-Geo

Overview:

Im working on a GIS-based traffic simulation tool which is created to model and visualize vehicle movements on real road networks by Mesa-Geo. The primary goal is to help the city planners and authorities in understanding and optimizing traffic flow by simulating congestion and evaluating management strategies.

Purpose:
This project's aim is to manage traffics' movement and show a proper understanding of the vehicle operations on the roads in the surrounding area through the simulation. I have been involved in this work for the last two months and the Jupyter notebook format is almost done. I'm now particularly concerned with the implementation of a continuous animation visualization, for which I have already shown as a GIF file.

why we need this

Problem Definition:
High vehicle density and complex road networks are two major reasons why traffic congestion is a big issue in Indian cities, especially in densely populated urban areas. This results in millions of travelers suffering from increased duration of travel, fuel combustion as well as pollution.
Objective:
By pursuing these future developments, this project has the potential to deliver more effective and adaptable solutions for managing traffic congestion in Indian cities. This, in turn, can lead to smoother commutes, reduced pollution, and an overall better quality of life for millions of urban residents.

Okay, I'm going to point you to another repository, which might help you (a lot). But it's a very new project maintained by a student in his free time. So when interacting on that repo, be very considerate, very thoughtful, very patient and really think about if you're adding value to the development process. Use it without any expectations of maintenance, help or support.

UXsim is a free, open-source macroscopic and mesoscopic network traffic flow simulator written in Python. It simulates the movements of car travelers and traffic congestion in road networks. It is suitable for simulating large-scale (e.g., city-scale) traffic phenomena. UXsim is especially useful for scientific and educational purposes because of its simple, lightweight, and customizable features, but users are free to use UXsim for any purpose.

You can install it with pip install -U uxsim and the documentation is here. Make sure you thoroughly studied the tutorials before asking questions, if any.

So use it, experiment with it, but don't add noise to that project.

I would welcome a PR to mesa-examples with a small demo using both Mesa and UXsim to simulate traffic. Make sure it highlights how the two can be used together, and how it can be used to answer a simple research questions.

If it isn't digestible by me in 5 minutes, it isn't for most in half an hour, and therefor to complicated.

Remember, you can built anything you want with open source libraries. You can write blogs about it, publish it, show it to people. But if you want to have an example included in a repo like mesa-examples, it needs to be very focussed and well scoped, of remarkable code quality, and it needs to showcase the capabilities of said library.

@EwoutH Yes, I was thinking of using a deep reinforcement learning model from UXSim because when I reviewed the old feedback you gave me, you suggested I look at this repo. Correct?

I think that would make it too complicated for a Mesa-example. I would start simpler.

The novelty is in showing how it can be integrated in a single model. Not doing some super fancy stuff that might be 0.1% better in some specific niche case. Occam's razor.

Those images look quite good. Once you have a clean, simple model, feel free to open a draft PR to mesa-examples.

I haven't started yet; I'm just working on enhancing my previous model without server visualization. As you suggested, I'm focusing on one topic at a time, so I'm removing the other topics from that notebook and reframing my approach.

Definitely, sir. I am trying to create a simple and understandable notebook. I assure you that the code will be easy enough for a beginner Python developer to understand.
