Google Maps should be considered. Any other good sources?

I think Google Maps and Open Street maps are good sources for this information, however, I'm not aware of any import procedures from the same.

Populating the JSON string from an app calling their APIs. We could write that ourselves if none exist.

We could, but that doesn't seem to be the right way of doing it.
