Discord for dummies is a guide intended for users who have no previous experience with Discord. The guide will provide basic information on how to use some of the main features of Discord.
The basics we are trying to guide you through are how to:
- create andcustomize a Discord server,
- create, customize, and use a text channel, and
- create, customize, and a new voice channel.
Due to the unforseen outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, all our school were forced to online lecture. As a result, all of our communication are either done by Slack or Discord.
Because Slack are more for school and official communications, most of our peers decide to use Discord for casual communications.
We decided to make a guide on how to use Discord, so people who wants to start using Discord to communicate and learn it quickly and efficiently.
We communicated with each other mainly through Discord by discussing the main features and functions we want to cover in this guide.
We would also use Slack to ask and communicate with our instruct during sechduled meeting and question sessions.
To finish this guide, we used multiple application, github guides, and exisiting markdown templates.
Because both of us are not familiar with writing instructions using markdowns, we had to read github guides for the correct syntax to use inside our markdown files.
Also, we used an exisiting markdown template called "Just the Docs" to set up the initial configaration of our guide markdown files.
We were able to learn how to use different headings, fonts, stylings, and impelementing images in our markdown files.
We used GitHub Desktop as our version control through out the project. Having previous experience with the software during our prvious term project helped us tremendously during the creation of this guide.
We were able to revert multiple unwanted changes during the project, which helped us saving significant amount of time.
We used Visual Code Studio as our main editting tool for the markdown files. We learned how to use the software during our web development course in the previous term, so using VCS makes us feel more confidant at making error free edittings.
By following the github guides, we were able to create more readable guide by using proper styling and designs.
To make the instructions easier to understand, we used a typography standard to help the readers know if an important keyword is being mentioned. Readers will spot if we are referring to a Discord built-in bottons or a [special icon image].
Also, we implemented different icons to inform the readers if they should pay more attention in the next section of the guide.

We were able to finish this guide through using different tools, softwares, online documentations, and communication with our peers and the instructor.
We learned that group project is harder than it seem because different people have different ideas and different view on project designs.
From working together on this project, my teammate and I learned how to communicate when we have an issue, aand how to use Github Desktop to verion control if one of us accidentally caused a glitch in the markdown file.
We believe this experience is very benefitial to us wwhen we start working at a real company. We learned the importance of communication, team work, and how to write an instruction guide using markdown at the same time. We are both looking forward to work together on other projects in the future.
