README for luahidapi
====================

hidapi can be found at: http://www.signal11.us/oss/hidapi/

This is a preliminary release. There are a number of things that need to
be done before one can call it a proper and stable release. So consider
this a working starting point from which a proper 'official' luahidapi
release can be released to the community.

This release should be considered as an early proof-of-concept only.

(1) Tested only on WinXP, MinGW/MSYS, Lua 5.1. The codebase is
    largely cross-platform.
(2) Change call bindings that are awkward where necessary.
(3) Sane Unicode handling, including missing serial number
    parameter support in the device open call.
(4) Make sure wchar_t handling works for different platforms.
(5) Review parameter validation.
(6) Add support for using a table of numbers as input to
    report/feature read/write.
(7) Test all API calls.
(8) Make it compatible with Lua 5.2.

If someone wants to make official releases, you are more than welcome to
take charge of it. I don't plan to make regular public releases, so I
would much rather leave it to someone else who wants to do it.

File Details
============

hidapi.h	From the official hidapi
hidapi.dll	Hijacked from javahidapi
luahidapi.h	luahidapi header file
luahidapi.c	luahidapi body
test.lua	test script, run like 'lua test.lua'
Makefile	a 'make' will build luahidapi.dll on MinGW/MSYS

You will also need a USB device running a USB HID profile. Win32 does
not allow users to touch keyboard and mouse HID devices, so you need
something else to communicate with. I run a custom HID on an old
PIC18F2450 that I normally use for prototyping.

Sample output run
=================

A simple luahidapi test:
Lib VERSION =   0.1
hid library: init

Device found:
path = '\\?\hid#vid_04d8&pid_8abc#6&332cce80&0&0000#{4d1e55b2-f16f-11cf-88cb-001111000030}'
vid = 0x04D8
pid = 0x8ABC
serial_number = '?'
release = 0x0001
manufacturer_string = 'custom HID test'
product_string = 'custom device'
usage_page = 0xFF00
usage = 0x01
interface = -1

Open: opened test device

Manufacturer String: custom HID test
Product String: custom device

Done non-blocking read test
Size of report read = 0

Writing 0x12345678 to device
Waiting...
Read 0x12345678 from device

Writing 0xDEADBEEF to device
Waiting...
Read 0xDEADBEEF from device

Close: closed test device
hid library: exit

P.S. I'm unsure why there is a single Unicode char for serial_number
in the enumeration. The device has no string index entry for the
serial number. The Unicode char is 0x0409. Perhaps it is a library
or platform glitch.
